Music Video Research

Audiences, Who watches music videos?

  • Nearly everyone will watch a music video, but they will all be different depending on genre and the age group that person is in and their personal taste in music. people watch music videos in order to see the story behind the song they have listened to as well as to support the band/artist that has produced the music video, to help it go viral so other people around the world are able to see it.

Narrative
  • Most music videos will have a story behind them to show the fans what that band/artist song was about and what it meant and represented about them. Typically the story will mostly concentrate on one aspect of the song, which is mostly whats said in the chorus or part of the lyrics to help relate to the song. Sometimes the story behind a song can have a different turn and still relate to the song but be about something completely different to that you may of thought the song was about for e.g A fast high up beat song might actually have a sad story being it which when you would usually except something happy to go with that song. Another example would be the music video for the song Radioactive by Imagine dragons, in this music video we are presented with a parody of illegal dog fighting where as the dogs have been replaced with stuff toys. We are also shown people betting on these fights and seeing the losers of the fights going through the trap door and falling into what appears to be a dungeon underneath the illegal fighting. We also see the band is trapped in this dungeon as the music video goes on with this mysterious girl who brings a contester to fight and wins she frees the band. In some ways the music video does relate to the song through some lyrics as 'checking out on the prison bus' this relates to why there in a dungeon. But other aspects of the music video do not relate to the song which makes the music video strange and different, and this is shown with the stuffed toys fighting.
Performance
  • Commonly in most music videos you will see the band/artist perform the song whether the whole music video is about them or you see brief shots of them performing from time to time. Though in some cases you won't see the artist/band perform at all in the music video to help the viewers to focus more on the backstory of the song then the person performing it. For example Martin Garrix song Don't look down shows no artist or band performing the song and completely focuses on the story following the song, which is a bored employee see's a man who is handsome and decides to get his attention so he will like her so she changes her outfit multiple times and does different things to just be rejected by him again and then decides to be herself but once again gets rejected but then meets someone who is like her.

Similarities and Differences in 3 Music Videos.

Counting Stars By One Republic, this music video consists of the viewer swapping between the band playing the song and to a crocodile walking around an abandoned basement and a evangelical healing session with all these people. - folk rock

Keep your eyes open By NEEDTOBREATHE, this music video shows us the viewer different scenes to do with our eyesight to keep in context with the song title, by showing us eyes, different instruments that opticians use and difference settings used on the music video to confuse our eyes. - alternative rock

Sugar By Maroon 5, This music video consists of following the band round the city as they crash as many weddings as they possibly can and showing their reactions to them crashing the wedding. - pop rock

Similarities and Differences
The similarities these three music videos all have is that they always show the band performing the song in the video. In the song counting stars we periodically flip back to the band singing the song from the other scene happening in  the music video. In keep your eyes open song we see the band throughout the whole music video but we have certain moments where you see the whole band performing the song. In the song sugar you see the band through out the music video again but only see them all performing together when there crashing the weddings. Another thing that these three music videos have in common is that the music genre is rock but, since there are so many different types of rock this also shows these bands differences. As One Republic has been described as many different genres including rock, pop and indie showing the difference to the other two music genre. NEEDTOBREATHE have also been described as a variety of different genres including rock, alternative rock and christian rock. Again with Maroon 5 it has been described as pop rock and pop.
Another thing that is in common with all these music videos is that they all have other scenes happening in the video part rom them singing the song in the and together, which shows variety and makes the video more interesting as the viewer also gets to see something else part from the band playing.

Music Video Genre

Music Video
There are many different genre's of music videos depending on who the artist is, for example theres rock music, Pop music, Country music and indie music.

The genre rock music genre tends to consist of loud and screamo music to represent that the artists in this genre are different from everyone else and then they tend to get a rebellious status because of their music. The cons of doing a Rock music video would be that it might be difficult to find the right place to film the rock video to se the theme and genre of this music video, as well with making people look like there in a rock music video.

The genre Pop music tends to consist of upbeat and happy music as its aimed mostly at young teenagers  who enjoy that sort of music. The pros of doing pop music video is that it wouldn't be hard to find someone where to film to fit the mood of the music, be easier to create a story to the music video since its so upbeat and happy. The cons of doing a pop music video is that

The genre country music is mostly people singing with an instrument as presented and shown in many country songs, the most common is a guitar to give the cowboy living on the ranch mood to the music.
The pros of doing a country music video is that you can create a story to the music easier instead of filming someone mouthing the words. The cons would be possibly finding someone who could mouth the words and play guitar at the same time or another instrument to fit within the context of the song.

The genre of Indie music is independent music which is usually produced from major commercial labels , a process that may include a do-it-yourself approach to recording and publishing. The pros of doing an indie song for a music video are that it would probably be easier to ask the music company permission to use the song as it will be smaller than most companies considerings its independent. The cons would be that if its a do-it-yourself record and publish song then the quality of the song may be poor.
